Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the sting of this disaster.

Sometimes you encounter situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer magnitude of destruction and just gives up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and badly all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for school.
I sweating. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was pointless.

A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
